Volunteers

Relay Races require a large amount of workers manning exchange locations. Each team contributes either volunteers or cash to help make that happen.

Team Type # of volunteers Hire Volunteer Cost
(thru 5/21)
Hire Volunteer Cost
(5/22-7/7)
Full & Semi-Ultra Teams 2 people $300 $600
6-Packs & Ultras 1 person $150 $300
High School Teams N/A N/A N/A

Teams make their volunteer selection at registration. A team may change from supplying people to Hiring Volunteers, but not from Hiring Volunteers to supplying people. Volunteer Funds are not refundable.

To fulfill a 2 volunteer requirement, 1 person can work 2 spots AND a team can choose to supply 1 person and pay for the 2nd. Contact the Race Director for more info.

Extra volunteers are always welcome, however please no children under 12.

Team Supplied Volunteers

Team volunteers are GREATLY APPRECIATED. Supportive family members, friendly co-workers, whomever you are, thank you for helping cover the breadth of this race. Here’s a brief overview of what volunteering entails.

Exchanges
- Most volunteers will be at Exchange Locations. These are where teams hand off from one runner to the next. Duties at an exchange generally fall into the following categories
Parking/Traffic - Making sure teams know where to park, assisting vehicles in doing so if congestion occurs.
Handoff Tracking - Marking off each team as they pass through the actual runner exchange
Front Line Presence - Teams will sometimes approach with questions or issues. Volunteers are given a brief prep of info at the start of their shift to assist with basic questions (how far is the next leg?) and contact methods for things they cannot answer or address. Occasionally, volunteers spread important messages at exchanges (pausing the race for lightning for example).
Cheerleading - Runners love excitement and energy and you can help provide that!
Clean-Up - Once the race has concluded at a location, we return it to better than we found we it. Trash is swept for and our delineator cones are gathered to a single, out-of-the-way spot.

Traffic Crossings - A few volunteer spots are locations where the active runners are crossing roads. A volunteer stationed at such a spot is there to assist the runner in waiting and crossing safely. In almost every case, WE DO NOT STOP TRAFFIC. If there is a crossing signal, the volunteer does their best to time pressing it to help the runner wait as little as possible.

What We Provide You - We provide every location with orange flags, checkpoint paperwork, and safety vests for every volunteer. Nighttime locations receive orange glow-wands, and area light sets. Each location’s volunteers are checked-in ahead of time by a race official.

S2S Partner Groups

Volunteer funds are used to partner with local non-profits and groups. They provide people to volunteer along the course, and NxNW makes contributions to their group our cause. A great way for S2S to give back to communities we run through. These are some of the groups we’ve supported over the years.
